Résumé Alors que le cinquantenaire des indépendances a suscité autant de célébrations que de critiques desdites célébrations, l'enjeu du présent texte est de faire une étude comparée de deux spectacles récents qui ont en commun d'envisager le fait colonial comme un temps au passé mais également comme part du temps présent : Bloody Niggers (Dorcy Rugamba, Jacques Delcuvellerie, 2007) et Vive la France (Mohamed Rouabhi, 2006). Ces deux spectacles critiquent du même mouvement les survivances, les résurgences et les nouvelles formes de domination entre anciennes puissances coloniales et anciennes colonies, entre descendants de colons et descendants de colonisés. Peut-on alors qualifier ce théâtre de « postcolonial » ? S'agit-il d'un théâtre « identitaire » comme l'affirme Gérard Noiriel à propos de l'œuvre de Mohamed Rouabhi, ou d'un théâtre universaliste ? Entend-il faire œuvre historique ou prendre parti au sein d'une guerre des mémoires ? Poser ces questions suppose d'interroger le « au nom de quoi » et le « à partir d'où » de la dénonciation, ce qui implique de considérer avec attention la récurrence de certains choix esthétiques : l'utilisation de matériaux documentaires, le jeu sur la frontalité de l'adresse au public dans une forme-procès et la mise en scène d'une subjectivité indignée. Nous posons l'hypothèse que cette entrée dramaturgique permet de mettre au jour une force spécifique de la critique artistique susceptible d'œuvrer à la relance du projet critique.

This work, which focuses on the 1989-2007 period, aims at clarifying the various meanings of "political theatre", a polysemic notion, which has been used at every turn, both in the practice and in the discourse of the various players on the theatrical stage : artists, theatre managers, programme planners, state and local authorities. Rejecting a normative, teleological approach based on the assumption that in the course of time one definition will invariably be succeeded and superseded by a better one, we started instead from our observation that in the past 20 years, the phrase "political theatre" has been subjected to a fairly large but by no mean unlimited number of simultaneous interpretations. This is why we adapted for the theatrical sphere a concept borrowed from the field of sociology, and more precisely from the works of Luc Boltanski and Laurent Thévenot, the concept of "cité." We then proceeded to define each of the "cités" of political theatre as a coherent theatrical discourse - by this word we mean not just the shows but also the public statements made by artists, critics and officials. This discourse is based on an ideology stemming from a specific conception of history and policy, and results in a legitimation of the theatre and of artists, both in the theatrical field and in society at large. We have identified four different "cités" of "political theatre" which have coexisted and achieved recognition over the past two decades, though with varying degrees : the city of postpolitcal theatre, the city of oecumenical political theatre, the city of the radical reform of the theatrical and political community, and the city of political struggle theatre. ; L'enjeu du présent travail consiste à saisir les différentes significations que peut prendre, sur la période 1989-2007, l'expression " théâtre politique ", aussi omniprésente dans la pratique et dans le discours des différents acteurs du théâtre - artistes, directeurs de théâtre, programmateurs, pouvoirs publics - que polysémique. Refusant une approche normative et téléologique, fondée sur un principe de dépassement chrono-logique d'une définition par une autre, et parce qu'il nous paraissait que coexistait sur cette période une pluralité mais non une infinité de significations à l'expression " théâtre politique ", nous avons adapté à la sphère théâtrale un concept emprunté au champ de la sociologie, et plus précisément aux travaux de Luc Boltanski et Laurent Thévenot : le concept de " cité ". Nous avons défini chaque " cité du théâtre politique " comme un discours théâtral cohérent, le terme discours recouvrant aussi bien les spectacles que les propos publics tenus par les artistes, par les pouvoirs publics et par la critique. Dans chaque cité, ce discours se fonde sur une vision du monde - induite par une conception spécifique de l'histoire et du politique - qui détermine une légitimation du théâtre et de l'artiste au sein du champ théâtral et au sein de la société. Nous avons distingué quatre cités du théâtre politique qui nous paraissaient actives sur cette période, quoiqu'à des degrés d'existence et de reconnaissance variables : la cité du théâtre postpolitique, la cité du théâtre politique œcuménique, la cité de refondation de la communauté théâtrale et politique et la cité du théâtre de lutte politique.

Résumé Aujourd'hui âgée de 72 ans, Ariane Mnouchkine est, depuis 1964, la figure de proue du Théâtre du Soleil. Cette compagnie indépendante est souvent citée comme emblème du « théâtre public » français dont elle incarne de fait certaines valeurs cardinales : l'exigence de la qualité artistique, le souci du public et d'une démocratisation de l'accès aux œuvres, ainsi que la revendication d'un « art citoyen » en prise avec les enjeux politiques les plus contemporains. Cependant, le positionnement de cette troupe au sein de l'institution théâtrale, tout comme le corpus idéologique de la cheffe de troupe qu'est Ariane Mnouchkine, se laissent difficilement catégoriser. Nous avons souhaité aborder avec elle cette singularité du Théâtre du Soleil et sa dimension politique, en revenant à la fois sur le mode collectif d'organisation de la troupe et sur les formes d'engagement dont témoignent plusieurs créations théâtrales de la décennie écoulée.
